After more than 25 years of persistently playing almost every style of music except the one usually associated with the banjo, it was time to get back to playing some good old-fashioned bluegrass. Leon Hunt and long-time musical collaborator Jason Titley, had actually been discussing the possibility of putting a bluegrass band together for a while, but it was the death of the original architect of the bluegrass banjo style, Earl Scruggs in 2012 that provided the impetus to finally get the ball rolling. The ‘first call’ candidates for the other half of the band were Ben Somers (bass and vocals) and Joe Hymas (mandolin and vocals). Fortunately both were excited by the project and accepted immediately. The band’s debut CD, Farewell Blues (Remembering Earl Scruggs) was launched at this year’s prestigious Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow, and If the reviews are anything to go by, is an absolute triumph!
